Connect direct.
Or through an aggregator?
Both shapes buy different things. BeefAPI is an aggregator, and so is OpenRouter, so the useful comparison is what an aggregator lets you control per request and when a direct provider contract is simply the better answer.

DIRECT OR AGGREGATED
BEEFAPICOMPARISON
Should I connect to providers directly, or go through an aggregator?
Direct access or aggregation
- Direct to a provider: one vendor contract, one key and one support path. Vendor-only features, committed spend and enterprise terms live here.
- Through an aggregator: one credential and one balance across several vendors, plus a per-request record of what was used. BeefAPI serves an OpenAI-compatible Base URL and an Anthropic-compatible path; OpenRouter serves its own routing API in front of many providers.
Comparing aggregators means comparing request controls
- OpenRouter publishes request-level routing controls such as
provider.order,allow_fallbacksandrequire_parametersin its provider routing documentation. - BeefAPI publishes USD rates for text, image and video units through pricing.usd.json and records the settled USD amount of each request in the Usage log.
- Whether a request can be pinned to one upstream provider, and which fallbacks are allowed, is a per-service question. Check it for the aggregator you are evaluating instead of assuming it.
Choose by these conditions
- Choose direct when the vendor's own contract, region, data terms, committed quota or vendor-only feature set is a requirement you cannot delegate.
- Choose an aggregator when one credential, one balance and one usage record across several model families saves real integration work, and the endpoints you need are documented.
- Prefer an aggregator with explicit request-level routing controls when provider selection or fallback order is a functional requirement of your application.
- In every case, compare the same input, output, cache and media units, and confirm the exact endpoints, limits, failure behaviour and support path before you commit.
How to test the decision
Send one representative request to each candidate, then compare the response and its recorded cost. BeefAPI records a USD amount per request, so the comparison uses the same units as the price list rather than a per-month estimate.
These are published, checkable facts, not a ranking. Other services' capabilities, prices and terms change, so verify them on the vendor's current documentation before you decide. BeefAPI availability is not guaranteed for every request, and recorded route behaviour is on the status page.
Still deciding
Is one key across many models the same as automatic failover?
No. A single credential set is an access and billing convenience. Whether a specific request is retried on another route is a separate behaviour, and you should confirm it for the endpoints you depend on instead of assuming it.
Does going through an aggregator change which terms apply to a call?
Read the applicable terms and data-handling documentation of both the aggregator you use and the upstream provider of the model you call, and keep the request ID that identifies the call. This page does not decide that question for you.
